The UUMA is the professional organization for Unitarian Universalist ministers. The mission of the UUMA is to nurture excellence in ministry through collegiality, continuing education and collaboration.

Where do I start?

A good place to start is to get connected with your local chapter. There are twenty chapters of the UUMA, organized geographically, each of which meets regularly for continuing education and collegiality. You can find a list of chapters here. Each chapter has its own page on this website listing upcoming events and chapter leadership. The best way to get connected is to reach out to your chapter leadership. They can let you know what is happening in your area.

What programs does the UUMA offer?

Besides regular chapter meetings, the UUMA offers various programs for members in different stages of ministry:

Ministry Days: Ministry Days is an annual, two-day conference for all UUMA members that takes place just before the UUA's General Assembly. The conference includes worship, continuing education programming, meetings regarding the business of the Association, and ample time to connect with colleagues.

The Institute for Excellence in Ministry
: The Institute is a week-long professional development event that takes place every other year at the end of January and is open to all UUMA members. Participants engage in an in-depth seminars for several hours each day, as well as taking part in opportunities for worship, collegiality and large-group programming. 

The UUA and UUMA are collaborating on expanding and strengthening mentoring, in order to:

  1. Improve the odds of successful UU ministries, especially for communities that have been historically marginalized
  2. Bolster our mentoring culture while creating the infrastructure to further ministerial formation
  3. Make mentoring relationship more effective and more rewarding while offering mentoring for those in preliminary fellowship and for candidates.
  4. Continue to foster and nurture excellence in ministry


Coaching: Coaching is designed for ministers in final fellowship and is a powerful tool for meeting personal and professional goals. Through directed conversation, a coach can help you identify, set, and reach the right action-oriented goals for your work, during 8 to 12 coaching sessions over a one-year period. All of our coaches are UUMA members with expertise in specific areas of ministry (Growth, Staff Supervision, etc.), and have been trained in the art of coaching.


Who is in charge of the UUMA?

Our Board of Trustees, elected by the membership, sets the mission, vision and policies for the Association. Our Executive Team, pro-tem, who is hired and supervised by the Board of Trustees, is charged with fulfilling the mission and vision.

All Regular, Life and Associate members of the UUMA are eligible to vote in the Annual Meeting, which takes place in June each year. Student members receive all benefits of membership except the right to vote.  The Annual Meeting is where we elect leaders, vote on the budget for the coming year, and discuss changes to the By-laws and Guidelines

In addition to the Board, there are five volunteer committees that oversee different aspects of the Association:

  • CENTER Committee: The C.E.N.T.E.R. Committee (Continuing Education, Network, Training, Enrichment and Renewal) is dedicated to helping professional ministers understand and prepare to meet the increasingly expanding and complex demands of religious leadership by designing and delivering excellent continuing education programming. 
  • Nominating CommitteeThe UUMA Nominating Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees for all Board of Trustees Positions, the Berry Street Conference Committee, and the Nominating Committee.
  • Committee for Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression and Multiculturalism: CARAOM works to strengthen the ministry of the UUMA by assisting the UUMA in becoming and remaining an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and multicultural organization with particular attention to racial, cultural, ethnic, and economic oppressions.
  • Guidelines Committee: This committee conducts regular study of the UUMA Guidelines for the Conduct of Ministry and makes recommendations for revisions.
  • Committee on Ethics and Collegiality: The purpose of this committee is to strengthen our ministries by promoting collegiality and the highest ethical and professional conduct.

There are seven paid staff members. The current staff are:

What are the responsibilities of membership?

Members are required to pay dues each year to stay in active membership. Members must also abide by the UUMA’s Constitution & Bylaws and the Guidelines for the Conduct of Ministry.
