UUMA Statement in Response to The United Methodist Church
Wednesday, February 27, 2019
We recognize that some of us are processing our own feelings regarding the United Methodist Church's decision to tighten their ban on same-sex marriage and gay clergy. Some of us are providing support to loved ones and colleagues who are involved in the UMC church. Some of us are resonating with those times and places when our faith, UU and otherwise, failed us because of our identity. The UUMA offers its love and support for you at this time. Remember that as an association, we do not have to struggle alone, we are here for one another. If you need help or a reassuring word, reach out. If you see someone struggling, reach out. Lean in and love hard. Let’s grow stronger together.
If you are looking for a word of encouragement or an expression of solidarity to share with LGBTQ United Methodists and their allies, we recommend the “love Letter to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and gender non-conforming United Methodists” published by the Religious Institute. As the Co-Directors of the UUMA, we have all signed and it isn’t too late for you to sign on as well. Even though the results from the General Conference are already in, this love letter, in written and video form, is a beautiful expression which might offer a bit of hope and courage for those who are struggling.
