Continuing the Legacy

Last week, we lost two of our civil rights heroes in one day. We have heard a lot about the death of Rep. John Lewis. But less has been mentioned of Rev. C. T. Vivian. His passing stood out to me because his wife, Octavia, was a close friend of my grandmother. So the Vivians were a distant part of my life growing up. They did not visit often, but I relished my time with them. I do remember them talking about the Civil Rights Movement and the March on Washington during a visit. But I had no idea that I was in the presence of a leader in that movement. I was just in awe of them because they shared that they had bought the house next door for their books. I wonder if their visits to our house instead of my grandmother’s house were so that I could be exposed to them.

In the wake of their passing, I have been wondering about how we continue their work. The Commission on Institutional Change’s report “Widening the Circle” is a part of the movement forward. I look forward to delving deeper into the recommendations to see how they might shape my ministry at the UUMA and beyond.

This year we will build on one of the recommendations in the report and create a speaker series that will center the voices of Black, Indigenous, Scholars of Color. Look for more details in the coming months. We are also going to have a series of workshops to develop skills for this pandemic time. If you have ideas for one of these workshops, or another Continuing Education offering, please submit on this. I look forward to another year of learning and growing together.

UUMA Center Institute for the Learning Ministry

Postponed to 2022

To ensure everyone’s safety in this pandemic time, we are postponing the Institute. The new dates are January 31-February 4 2022.The new dates resulted in a $10 increase in registration fees. If you registered before June 30, we will honor the original rate. For more information and to register, click on the registration link .

We are excited to announce that we received a grant from the UU Funding Program to offer Institute scholarships for staff teams. These scholarships will cover the housing and registration so that you can bring another religious professional from your staff team. More information and applications will be available later this year.
