Block1From the Acting Executive Director

The ministry of Good Offices is a critical part of the UUMA's work. This is one of the ministries that directly supports ministers and ministriein the pursuit of health and in times of challenge. For the first time in recent memory, we have been engaged in a thorough assessment of the Good Offices program. We are still sifting through all the feedback we have received in an effort to learn how we can strengthen the program in the future. But before we even sent out one single survey, it was painfully clear to us that our Good Officer corps is not reflective of the diversity of our ministry. We have developed a plan for change, which includes opening a pathway to becoming a Good Officer beyond chapter election.

Beginning today,we are inviting applications from ministers with historically marginalized identities who are interested in serving as a Dedicated Good Officer for other ministers with historically marginalized identities. This follows the model we have been using increasingly at UUMA events of inviting a person of color to serve as a Dedicated Chaplain for people of color. We hope to expand our Good Officer corps to include ministers of color, trans, genderqueer and non-binary ministers and ministers with disabilities who would like to offer Good Offices services to other ministers who share those identities. Dedicated Good Officers will be full members of the Good Officer corps - the difference is that rather than having a chapter full of colleagues as their focus for support, Dedicated Good Officers will have a community of ministers who share an identity as their focus for support.
If you are interested in becoming a Dedicated Good Officer, please complete an application by April 4. If you know someone who you think would be an excellent Dedicated Good Officer, please encourage them to apply. We will appoint Dedicated Good Officers by the beginning of May. Our hope is that all new Dedicated Good Officers will be able to attend the Good Officer training that will be held prior to Ministry Days and available to begin serving immediately afterwards. In addition to diversifying our Good Officer corps, we also plan to offer training for all Good Officers to continue developing their ability to serve in ways that are anti-racist and anti-oppressive. Many more possibilities for strengthening this ministry are under consideration and we'll report back more to you in the future after we have had a chance to fully digest the feedback you have provided and consider what it tells us about how to grow this vital ministry.
All my best,
Do you have a proposal for a Collegial Conversation we might have at Ministry Days? Please send your proposal including who would lead the conversation and the topic of discussion to Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer, Acting Executive Director, by March 31 ( We will choose topics of conversation from among those submitted in April with a goal of ensuring we have a range of conversations for your consideration.
