Fueling Your Flame: A Reflection from our Director of Operations

Janette Lallier, UUMA Director of Operations

“My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends - it gives a lovely light!”

Edna St. Vincent Millay

I was 12 years old when I pulled my first “all-nighter." I had procrastinated too long in reading Tom Sawyer for my English class and, being the good girl that I am, could not stand for going in unprepared. It was about that time my parents first warned me about burning my candle at both ends. It would be years before I found Edna St. Vincent Millay’s quote and a couple years more before my parents gave up their unsuccessful warnings. It seems to be this time, the darkest, of the year when my candle burns especially bright and low. Perhaps it is the same with you?

The holiday race feels even longer this year. With Hanukkah starting on December 2 and Kwanza ending on January 1, the 2018 holidays are more of a marathon than a sprint. And this weekend – Friday’s Winter Solstice, a Sunday Service (or more), Christmas Eve on Monday, and let’s not even talk about juggling in the life passages, hospital vigils, and committee celebrations that will undoubtedly come up in between – one can be grateful that the season is known for its miracles!

As your professional organization, the UUMA seeks to provide resources and encouragement for your journey and fuel for your flames. In that vein let us say: THANK YOU! Thank you for the endless committee meetings, orders of service, bed-side vigils, community appearances, and for sharing your light. And when the dust settles, remember to take time to replenish. While we at the UUMA will be taking a time of respite between Christmas and the New Year, we have set up some resources (below) you might enjoy after the holiday festivities fade into memory.

In addition to wishing you energy, grace, patience, and a little luck for the rest of the season, my Christmas wish for you is that you remember what you carry. Your light brings assurance to the fearful, comfort to the broken-hearted, and inspiration to the joyful. You, and your ministry, are a blessing to the world.
