Beyond the Call

What is the Beyond the Call program?

Beyond the Call (BTC) is a program jointly developed by the UUA and UUMA, originally, in 2012 which is designed to provide UUMA members in final fellowship (with some exceptions) a chance for in-depth study, ongoing collegial reflection and engagement in a critical area of advanced ministerial competence. The first BTC program was on Preaching and the Worship Arts, the second will be on Entrepreneurial Ministry and the third will be on Leading Intercultural Development and Social Witness.

Why are we offering this now?

Once a minister enters final fellowship there are no formal requirements for continuing education, nor a systematic process of coaching or mentoring. Ministers avail themselves of various one-time seminars and trainings from the private consultants, seminaries, the UUA or other organizations. Colleagues tell us that they want longer, more focused, professional development. Funds collected through grants support this program, which has the potential to impact hundreds of ministers in the next ten years

Who is eligible?

All UUMA members in final fellowship (with some exceptions for members in Preliminary Fellowship) who wish to dedicate themselves to serious in-depth study are encouraged to apply to Beyond the Call programs. Attendance at all retreats, the UUMA Institute, small group monthly conference calls, and facilitation of peer study/reflection groups are also required.  Students are asked to commit to be mentors/coaches in the area of study after completing the program.  Applications for the next Beyond the Call class (on Social Witness/Multiculturalism) will be available in late spring 2017 which an expected start date of January 2018.
