Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Summer Seminary which is to be held at Starr King School for the Ministry August 2-8. 2016. Former UUMA President and current UUA Board of Trustee member Rob Eller-Isaacs and his partner in life and ministry Janne reflect on the importance and the value of summer seminary for our youth and our future.
Beloved Colleagues: In counting our blessings at Thanksgiving we found ourselves thinking about how members of the Tower Club, our youth group, have stepped-up to stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. Every one of them credits the teachings of Unitarian Universalism as their prime motivation. All three of the key leaders in the effort attended Summer Seminary.
We are told that every successful applicant for Summer Seminary 2015 was recruited by a professional religious leader. We want to testify to the efficacy of Summer Seminary. Not only does it provide a taste of what ministry can be but it also provides a deep dive into the history, heritage and identity of our faith. Each of the youth returned to Saint Paul fired-up and raring to go. Their presence has enriched our youth group beyond measure.
It would be blessing enough to know the joy we take in the work inspires young people to consider going into the ministry. But we also want you to know the many ways in which the lessons learned at Summer Seminary can be put to work in the life of the church. We want to encourage you to take the opportunity seriously. Who has come of age in your congregation that exemplifies the qualities or attention, imagination, intelligence and commitment we look for in our ministers? Make a short list. Gather them together and tell them how much you love what you do.
Then tell them about Summer Seminary www.uua.org/summerseminary and encourage them to apply. We are so very grateful to the Association and to the Katie Tyson Fund for making Summer Seminary possible.
