From the Associate Executive Director
Melissa Carvill Ziemer

Even as I'm focusing my attention on preparing for Ministry Days and General Assembly in just a few weeks, I'm mindful that many of you will not be with us in person. If that includes you, consider this a little window into what you might have found when you stopped by the UUMA booth to learn more about how we are supporting ministries from beginning to end.

Continental implementation of the Ministerial Formation Network is underway! In partnership with the UUA, we are making a significant commitment to nurturing the flourishing of our ministry for future generations. The MFN promises discernment support, supplemental education and collegiality to all eligible aspirant and candidates for our ministry no matter where they live.We have learned a lot from the pilot of the program this year and feel confident that this program will be deeply rewarding for all who participate. If you would like to learn more or sign up to be a minister volunteer or participant in the program, please click here.

I have been fortunate throughout my life to have excellent mentors. One of them was a boss I had when I was working at Pacific Bell in my late 20s. I was relatively new to management in the corporate world and Jerry took me under his wing to help show me the ropes. One of the things he told me that I have held onto for more than 30 years was that he was a gardener. I was a bit surprised to hear that from a type A high-achieving General Manager in a Fortune 50 company so when I asked him why he shared wisdom that I have never forgotten. Read More...

I am just finishing my first year as your UUMA President. To say the least it has been quite an eventful year. Not the one that I expected, but I have been in ministry long enough to know that one cannot know the future, and that our expectations of what we think should happen do not always coincide with what actually happens. I have been alive long enough to know that your character matters most in the hard times.

What I also know from ministry and life is that to make it through the difficult times you need some good companions on the road with you. Read More...
From the Ministry Days Planning Team

Dear Ones:

So much has happened within our faith in the last three months - revelations of white supremacy and patriarchy operating in our institutions: the resignation of Peter Morales and other colleagues from the UUA; the arrest of a beloved colleague on child pornography charges: Don Southworth's Easter letter to the UUA Board and the UUMA Board's public response to it; disclosure of edits and redactions to last June's Berry Street essay. There's more. So much has happened within the UUMA and the UUA that has been the cause of pain and hurt, anger and rage, disenchantment and disillusion. For many, trust has eroded. Yes, for some there have been initial moments of reconciliation, healing, and even joy. But as colleagues we have barely begun to work through all that has happened.

Since April the UUMA Board and Staff have recognized that this year's Ministry Days in New Orleans cannot follow the usual patterns. This year must be different.

Pray like an Activist: Wisdom Teachings for the Practice of Freedom

Whether we are acting in solidarity with black lives, pursuing climate justice, defending LGBTQIA rights or protecting a woman's right to choose, working for social change in a time of tyranny is exhausting, often discouraging, and absolutely essential. How do we find the strength and capacity to continue the work? We nurture those qualities in ourselves through regular practices that feed the soul and remind us of what we're fighting for.
