Your Monthly News & Updates
From the Acting Executive Director
Melissa Carvill Ziemer

One of the things I've learned about ministry is that discernment never ends.In May I had the opportunity to co-facilitate the second module of Where Leads Our Call for our colleagues in Canada.I shared with them, in my little homily about calling and discernment, that I used to think one day I would have discerned - past tense.I thought that once I finally worked through all my questions about whether I was called to ministry and when and where and how, that I would be able to abide in confidence. In truth, that was my experience for a while.A couple of years into my ministry in Kent, I was overcome with a powerful feeling of yes.I was confident I was answering my call faithfully and well.

In time, that feeling began to change. The causes were mostly related to my other calling as a parent, but the consequences were much larger. After another long period of discernment, I began a new ministry with the UUMA and my spouse and children and I moved back to Western Massachusetts, which is where I lived before I went to seminary.I was still in the process of discerning the meaning of all these changes in my ministry and in my life when tumult began to unfold in our faith. This spring was a painful and challenging time for me and for many leaders in the UUMA. From the Board of Directors

Richard Speck
Hello! I am the new treasurer of the UUMA. You elected me Wednesday, June 21. This year's Ministry Days was fraught with the potential of conflict but it turned into a serious call to action for transforming our association and the larger UU movement. We heard powerful speakers share their pain of how white supremacy has affected their lives as colleagues in this faith. We gathered in small groups to explore our own feelings and observations concerning the recent turmoil within the Unitarian Universalist Association as well as our own UUMA. What set the tone for our annual gathering were powerful worship services drawing on the talents of members of our larger New Orleans colleagues, music director DeReau Farrar and our collegial choir, and a local Jazz band ensemble. The moving Berry Street Essay was delivered by Kristen Harper, Mel Hoover, Ashley Horan, Adam Robersmith and Marta Valentín. I hope that their remarks will be disseminated widely as we grapple with our own white supremacy within the UUMA. Colette Pichon Battle reminded us that race cannot be ignored when it comes to religion and politics. She did this with facts and a great sense of humor. I look forward to our work together to dismantle the systems of oppression that keep our association from being the beloved community for all our members. I invite you to join me on this journey towards wholeness.
