E-Update: June 2016
Your Monthly News & Updates
From the Executive Director
July will come. That is the mantra at the UUMA this time of year as we scurry around preparing for our largest gathering of the year. The weeks before Ministry Days are full of deadlines, editing, coordinating, planning, and often praying that we will have everything ready when we welcome 600 of our members to the convention center of the year. This year we are thinking more about those of us who won't be in Columbus hoping you'll watch and connect with colleagues in virtual ways.
This time of the year is also when many ministers, especially those in parishes, are gasping for air as they near the end of the traditional congregational"finish line". Some colleagues are bone-tired, some are enjoying the highs of recent ordinations, installations and successful annual meetings. And others are struggling to find more money in a congregational, organizational or personal budget to keep things rolling.
One of the many places my travels took me to in May was Boston for the second Summit on the Economic Sustainability of Ministries covenanted by the UUA....Read Full Article
From the Board of Trustees
Rev. Cheryl M. Walker, UUMA President Designate

The end of the church year is here for many of us. Church doesn't end, just the cycle of beginnings and ending of the church year. Budgets have been made for the coming year, some good and some difficult. In many of our congregations new officers have been elected or will be, and will assume their duties in July. We tidy up the past year and get ready for a new one. Things seem to wind down a bit as the summer approaches, in the church. But not for the UUMA!

June means a flurry of activity culminating in Ministry Days. It's no small feat to accommodate hundreds of our colleagues. Don and Janette and the entire staff and your UUMA Board of Trustees have been working for months getting everything ready for you. We've thought long and hard about the programming, scheduling, accommodations, presenters and a whole host of things big and small. And now it's time for you to show up.

Showing up can mean attending in person or by live streaming. The wonders of technology will allow our colleagues who cannot be physically present to attend via the internet. Groups of ministers can gather together and have their own mini-ministry days and have the company of colleagues. Or one can livestream from their own home or office.. .Read Full Article

Sustaining the Call
Rev. KendylGibbons,Co-Chair, UUMA Stewardship Advisory Team
Dear Colleagues,
Anyone who answers the call to ministry in pursuit of wealth has been misinformed. If you are like me, you do this work because of what it cultivates in the world, in others, and in ourselves. And yet, part of that work is to model good stewardship of our financial resources, which includes both short and long term generosity to support our values.

Our UU Ministers Association has been taking seriously the responsibility of maintaining the resources that will make it possible for us to nurture one another and to provide a strong ministry to future
generations. Our Sustaining the Call Endowment Campaign has raised commitments of over $725,000 since its origin in 2014, and we are well on the way to our goal of a million dollars raised by our own membership. Achieving this goal will make credible our approach to donors outside the UUMA, including our congregations and the wider UU world, as we expand the circle of those investing in the future of ministry. Here's my fellow co-chair, Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, to speak about the significance of giving at this time.
In you have not already given to the campaign, I invite you to consider pledging at this time.Have you considered a legacy gift/bequest to the campaign? A commitment now, indicating that you intend to arrange for a gift to be made to the UUMA endowment after your death, can nurture the well-being and excellence of your future colleagues in perpetuity.Legacy giving is the life blood of visionary institutional planning and there is no time like the present! You can make a legacy gift commitment or general pledge today by goingvisiting the UUMA giving page. You may alsoemail your legacy intentions
For me, a legacy gift to the UUMA endowment fund is a way of expressing my gratitude to the colleagues who have walked this journey with me, as well as a blessing upon those who will follow us. I hope you will join me in that commitment.

Do You Know Where Leads Our Call?

Six of our chapters can tell you the answer because they have been through module one of our third UUMA-wide conversation, Where Leads Our Call? Where Leads Our Call? provides an opportunity for conversation and reflection about our individual and collective calls. Module one focuses on Call and Excellence and module two on Call and Accountability. Feedback from those who have been through module one has been very positive. For more information on the programclick here. If your chapter or region would like to schedule module one, which is co-led by two trained colleagues, contactDon Southworthas soon as you can.
Welcome to the 2018 Institute for Excellence in Ministry
We are honored to co-chair the 2018 Institute for Excellence in Ministry. Our Institute for Excellence in Ministry offers more, and at a higher quality, than many other such events that we have seen. The blend of continuing education, superb worship and strengthening collegial bonds is unique. The Institute is so good, we couldn't keep it to ourselves! Our new partnership with Auburn Seminary will help us build on that excellence, and allow us to expand our offerings to our colleagues of different faiths. This new venture brings many opportunities and challenges, and we are excited to be a part of the process.
We will be sharing more details at Ministry Daysabout the Institute including information on the location and some of the speakers we'll be welcoming. We'll see you in person in Columbus or on your live stream.

We plan on testing several pilot programs in FY17 and roll out the program everywhere in FY 2018. We have been meeting with chapter leaders, will have a collegial conversation at Ministry Days and will post more details about the network and pilots later in the summer.
