Dear Colleague,  

 

It has been my great joy to be a part of the team planning this third Institute for Excellence in Ministry since the week after we were last together in Florida two years ago. Now it is just less than one month until we will gather together at the beautiful Asilomar Conference Grounds in Monterey! I can't wait to see all of your lovely faces midst the trees and dunes with the sound of crashing waves and the calls of the seagulls creating our tranquil soundtrack.

 

Like many of you, I am looking forward to thawing out in a warmer climate on a beautiful piece of California's coastline. I am so ready for the inspiration and new perspectives that I know will inevitably come from engagement in my seminar. I get all warm and teary when I remember how much I love worshiping in a community of my beloved colleagues. I am hungry for the messages I know I will receive in the worship and vespers services. I get a thrill anticipating how the music will transport us all - especially the one-hundred-member choir led by our music director, Jason Shelton.

 

But truthfully, the very best part, the part I am the most excited about is simply being together with all of you. Giving and receiving hugs and catching up with my long-time and far-flung friends, meeting some of my Facebook friends for the first time (!) and enjoying conversations with people I've never had the chance to talk with before - those are the nourishing experiences my spirit needs most of all right now.

 

There is still much work to be done between now and the day I pack up my suitcase and head to Asilomar. But I will be counting these next 24 days until we are all together with great anticipation.

  • Monterey Movie Tour - Half day (Wed)$48/person 18 person min
  • Point Lobos Nature Hike & Photograph Safari - Half Day  (Wed)  $128/per adult, 10 person min
  • Monterey Peninsula Sightseeing / Family Fun Tour - Half Day (Wed)  $75/per adult, $55/per child 4 person min.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium / Cannery Row Shopping - Half Day (Thurs.) Afternoon Shuttle Ticket: $20 (20 person min) Aquarium Tickets: $40/per adult, $25/ senior & youth, $25/per child

Volunteer at the Institute!

We are seeking volunteers to help out in a variety of roles during the UUMA CENTER Institute. Sign up here!

 

Volunteer Role Descriptions:

 

Front-Desk Greeters: Greet colleagues at the front desk, answer initial questions, and help them get to their rooms and to registration. This will involve map-reading or even walking guests to their destination.

 

Airport Greeters: Greet colleagues at the Monterey Airport, direct to shuttles and other ground transportation.

 

Registration Helpers: Greet colleagues at the Registration Table, and assemble and give out packets and name tags.

Accessibility Volunteers: Be on call to assist colleagues who request help getting food or drink during meals. Sign-ups for this role are by day. You will be on call for all three meals that day.

 

Worship Ushers: Help people find seats, and help with the offering.

Paid Service Opportunities 

January 12 Deadline!

 

The following opportunities for service are available during the Institute. The positions below include a modest honorarium to offset the cost of registration:


Chaplains
: Chaplains will be available to community members who are in the need of immediate ministerial support or guidance. Chaplains should be prepared to be called out of seminar programs in a crisis situation. Chaplains may be requested by the Right Relationship Team to respond to a situation needing pastoral attention. Honorarium: $250

Morning Spiritual Practice Leader: Each morning from 6:45AM - 7:30AM there will be an opportunity for spiritual practice groups. Group leaders are needed to lead particular programs. Program ideas include yoga, meditation, running, exercise on the beach, dream group, journaling, etc. Leaders will be expected to lead their program Tuesday- Friday mornings. Honorarium: $150

Shuttle Spaces:  January 12 Deadline!

 

There remain a few spaces on the shuttle buses from SJC and MRY (SFO are full).  Once a bus is filled it will be removed from the website - please act quickly!!  Registration will remain open until Jan. 12.

A New Way to Connect: Institute Meet-ups!

This year we are making easier than ever to gather groups of people together for conversation, meet and greets, games, yoga, or whatever else you'd like to do! We have created a Meet-up group for the UUMA and anyone can create a Meet-up or look over what's been created and join in. Here's what to do:

  2. Join the UUMA Meet-up here: You need to be approved to be a member, which we do manually, so make sure to sign up before the Institute!
