Your SEUUMA leaders have put together a great program for our fall retreat!

“Preaching from the Heart,” presented by the Reverends M’ellen Kennedy and Stephen Shick, will offer a supportive and inspirational time to learn some basic elements of preaching without a script. The program will include worship, short lectures, discussion, exercises, and small group work.

“Extemporaneous preaching,” they say, “offers rich opportunities for deepening ministry and connecting with the hearts and minds of our people. Once highly valued in the liberal tradition, this art, having nearly vanished, is making a comeback. The recovery of this art can help ministers come alive to their true self when delivering sermons or presenting in a variety of traditional and newly emerging electronic settings.”

Rev. Shick has practiced this style of preaching for over sixteen years and leads workshops and retreats for ministers on the subject. Rev. Kennedy has been preaching extemporaneously for seven years. For more information on the program and the presenters, please go here.

But wait, that’s not all!!!

Wellness Recover Action Plan. Ministers from the Knoxville, TN, area congregations will lead us in an evening program on Wednesday night. WRAP, which stands for Wellness Recover Action Plan, addresses mental health issues and how we support colleagues. (This year, there will not be an Odyssey presentation by a colleague sharing their ministerial journey.)

Worship Opportunities! In keeping with previous retreat schedules, we will offer 30-minute morning and evening worship services each day. Please email Alison Eskildsen ( to express your interest and day/time (Wednesday evening is already spoken for).

A complete schedule of activities will be sent to you closer to the Retreat date, but will be similar to previous retreats. We aim to balance social and educational time with spiritual and rejuvenation time.

Fall is beautiful at The Mountain. Please make every effort to join us!
