Mission: We serve the UUMA to promote leadership which reflects the rich diversity of our liberal religious tradition. We believe each of our UUMA members has leadership skills to share. We affirm a culture of inclusion which calls each of us to deepen our commitment to our evolving collective wisdom and a willingness to participate in leadership roles in our UUMA chapters, clusters and the association. We encourage support of one another in our ministries so that each member may be inspired to consider how they might constructively serve the ideals of ministry in our progressive faith.

The Scribe virtually “convenes” the Berry Street Committee by e-mail, usually in mid February or so. After considerable (and confidential) discussion, Committee members select the minister to be invited by the Scribe to deliver the Essay in the year following. Should the minister invited decline, the selection process begins again. Its invitation accepted, the Committee is adjourned. By tradition the retiring Committee member leads a prayer of invocation at the Berry Street Conference in June. By tradition a member of the Committee “nominates” the Conference “Moderator” (actually, that minister whom the Essayist has asked to introduce him or her). Committee members have no other duties, unless the Scribe should break a leg, in which case a Committee member would need to preside at the June Conference.
